MARQUETTE, Mich. (Map, News) - Authorities say convicted killer and suspected serial killer, John Norman Collins (Who changed his last name to Chapman), convicted in 1971 of murdering Karen Sue Beineman, has escaped from Marquette State Prison.

Lt. Dave Meinert of the Michigan Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says guards at the Marquette County facility noticed Collins missing at the 12:00 a.m. count early Tuesday. Meinert says Collins was in maximum security and the escape is being considered an ongoing prison investigation. Tracking dogs followed then lost a scent trail near a hiking trailhead over a mile away.

Collins is 60 years old, six foot one, weighs 220 pounds and has graying brown hair that is shoulder length.

The prison has an escape detail working with local law enforcement to find Collins.

UPDATE (10:30am)-Prison officials have released this image of John Norman Collins as seen in a recent jail photo:

Dude are you serious? This is messed up!

Does anybody think he'd come back this way? Where would he go?

Anonymous said...

Was he last seen fleeing the prison on a Triumph motorcycle? Have the cops staked out Roy's Squeeze-in?

Maybe this time when they catch up to him justice will really be served, and he will be *accidentally* killed during capture.

Here's a photo of him taken in February. What's worrisome is that often criminals return to the scene of their crimes. Citizens should be on the alert.

How AWFUL!! I hope he is found very soon

Anonymous said...

Looks like the police from the Mackinac Bridge picture expect him to come downstate. Very scary times

This wouldn't have anything to do with Aprils fool day would it? Seems you've fooled more then your fair share.

Come now anonymous, would old Johnny REALLY do that? This is a site for SERIOUS newsworthy items.

You might Johnny, you might. And if you did, that was a classic for sure. LOL!

Well OK then, it IS an April Fool's joke. I planned this one for quite a while, hopefully nobody is sitting in their basement with a shotgun reading this...

Happy April Fool's Day!!!

Anonymous said...

Why the hell would you joke about this? why is this funny? I live near where he used to live in ypsilanti and look much like his victims did. wow, find another hobby.

Anonymous said...

I happen to work at the Prison in Marquette, and rest assured John Collins hasnt escaped. OR even tried for that matter. So get your facts straight. This is childish and bold. Furthermore he maybe a criminal- but cant you let him do his time? Maybe someday you will be exploited just as you have done to him.

Anonymous said...

I can laugh at a good April Fool's joke as well as anybody, but I live in Ann Arbor, and you just gave me a "heart attack". I was just watching an episode on "Investigation Discovery" about the murder of Jane Mixer, and I decided to look ol' Johnny up and just see when he is supposed to be parolled. Does anyone know when that is? So far I can't find anything other than he was sentenced to "at least" 20 years.

Anonymous said...

What some people find cute,This is the biggest lie I've heard since the weapons of mass destruction bull....
I work at MBP and I can assure you he is there and will remain there untill he leaves in a box....

Anonymous said...

Collins went to trial and, on August 19, 1970, was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.
Some things just aren't funny.

Anonymous said...

Serial killers are an April Fool's joke? No way; any killer's possible escape is not funny.

I was at EMU when John Norman (Collins) Chapman was around. It was horrifying. Horror movies have not ever matched the true horror of those girls and women who were killed.

Sorry that you thought this was a great idea. Please try to find better subjects. There are a lot of them out there, and there are even ones that are truly funny. Of course, that is probably asking an awful lot considering the source.

You suck! Do you have any idea of the damage to the victims families this caused? I hope you've lost your job!

I actually lived in the bedroom he lived in years after he lived there it is just up the street from the arm of honor house and across the street. Had some really wierd dreams there. It is the bed room straight at the top of the stairs. Could not get chic's in there for nothing. Well maybe a couple. Everyone told me it was his room and I never belived them until I read the book years later and it described where he was living. That was 1980 I wonder if anyone else ever had bad dreams?

Anonymous said...

That is very interesting. What kind of weird dreams did you have in his old room? Probably has negative energy in there-he is very evil, in my opinion, regardless of how charming he may be. I just finished reading Catching Serial Killers by Earl james-he headed the task force who dealt with Collins. It mentioned in there that in late 1968 he asked someone at Motor Wheel Company, where he worked if they ever had dreams of taking girls out, raping them and killing them. Strange thing to ask-but then he doesn't think like other people. I met someone who was up at marquette Prison with him, he was his handball partner. He said he is dangerous-and should never be let out or transferred to Canada. Scary thought, huh?

you asshole the first woman he kill her name is mary she was my mom's best friend in high school you do not kidd about something like that use your fucking brain if you have one or maybe you are just sick minded just like him !!!!!

I think you all have to much time on your hands to be talking about something that happened a life time ago. He isnt coming home, he isnt getting out. He is going to die there and only when he does come home, it will be so his family can be at peace. And if he did so call ESCAPE, home is the last place he would go to, and same goes for where the crime took place. His family is not from the states.

& there was no DNA evidence, and there has already been 2 murders they THOUGHT he did, that in past recent years they have been other people, how fair is that a man gets arrested in his late 50's or 60's to start serving his time for a crime he is being punished for cuz they THOUGHT he did a whole string of murders. No ones on here commenting about them, they lived and breathed among us after doing such cruel crimes like that. How many people do you know get 2 life sentences w/out the posibility of parole for being charged with only one murder. Now a days as sad as it is, if you kill someone, most will see the light of day again, where as when it comes to him, he wont.

Anonymous said...

He cannot escape either-he has a history of prior attempted escapes-that's how he ended up at Marquette-very remote and hard to escape from. I've been to Marquette prison, visiting a friend's son-and it is very remote and scary. I doubt he has much family left-his mother died in 1988 and I don't know if there are any left who associate with him. He is a Security level V because he is a high escape risk-would you really want him free on the streets just because he has spent 40 years locked up and you feel pity for him?

Anonymous said...

There will always be an interest in John Collins, partly because he has never confessed and he sure doesn't seem like a killer-until you start doing research on him, or know someone who knew him. I know at least 3 people who were in prison with him and they sure think he is guilty. There was no DNA testing when he was killing-no one even had coined the term serial killers yet. It was an innocent age then, nowadays he might be caught sooner. Then he got himself caught, through his arrogance. I do feel a measure of pity for him, he had so much, an All American Golden Boy-he had charm, intelligence, good looks-and he threw it all away. I believe his victims only totaled 7 altogether, including the one from California. I feel even more so for his victims-they had so much more going for them and they were so innocent-and too trusting. Oddly enough, John and I share a birthday of June 17, I imagine that is why I take such an interest in him. Believe me, he has many females who do write to him-and he is still very magnetic-so he is not forgotten nor will he ever be. In my opinion, he is guilty-even as i wish I could say he wasn't.

Anonymous said...

And yes, I am aware that two murders he was suspected of were attributed to other men. Gary Lieterman was convicted of the Jane Mixer murder in 2005, using DNA evidence, even though that is also questionable. The Eileen Adams case was laid on Robert Bowman, who I am not sure has ever been found. Of course, these killings did not fit the others really, so they could be discounted. It sounds like you think he is innocent-if you do research, you will find he is not innocent at all. Good looking, charming, intelligent, articulate, very likeable-but very guilty.

Anonymous said...

John Collins only got ONE life sentence, for the first-degree murder of Karen Sue Beineman. And that always carries an automatic life without parole sentence. It almost sounds like you have know John at some time-or you indentify with him someone.

Anonymous said...

Sorry for the typos-I meant to say that it sounds like you have either known John at some time or you identify with him. And he did try to escape from Marquette, in 1979. I think he and the other prisoners might have pulled it off, if an alert guard hadn't noticed the tunnel they were digging. He almost was free yet again.

Jesus people all u have to do is look him up looks like he is still in prison go figure...Just drama

Don't ever joke about murderers escaping from jail again. It isn't funny and its a story that spreads quickly and relatives of the deceased find out and it is very upsetting.

In short, just grow the fuck up and quick

Anonymous said...

I almost had a heart attack when i read this, this is not funny at all, i could say more but get a life, those girls deserve better.

Anonymous said...

He has plenty of family left that still continuously talk to him. If he is guilty, I believe he dosnt know or remember, like a black out type of thing. And that his mom and possibly his father figures have continuously molested him as well as his siblings. And if he does ever escape with success, Michigan and home is the last place he would ever go. He is a kind, sweet man these days, strong and buff, a man who has to do what he has to do to survive the jail life. He is locked up 23 hours a day. He is paying for what he is believed to have done. I dont think he will confess to something he dosnt know/think he did.

Anonymous said...

I have done a lot of research on John Collins-out of respect for John, since I don't know him, I did as thorough job as I could. At first I thought maybe he isn't guilty, but the more I researched and read I am of the opinion that he is guilty. Maybe he doesn't remember any of it-and maybe he just doesn't think he is guilty. I remember his ex=handball partner saying that he is really nice-until you get to know him-that he doesn't think like other people. I am divided as to how I feel about John-I do think he is guilty, but I do have some compassion for him, seeing as we share the same birthday. I don't think he should ever be released or transferred to Canada-he is still too dangerous. Yes he is strong and very buff-you can still see his good looks. He always did have a sweet and kind side, from what I have read-and also a very sick, vicious side too. He is quite a mystery. My sympathies and respect go out to the victims and their families for their losses, I have not forgot them. And yes I agree that his mother has a very big part in the abuse he suffered, as well as the other male figures in his life-I think he will always be a mystery. Remember-to understand someone, you must empathize with them.

If there was ever a need for some people to lighten the fuck up, it's some of the tightasses posting here. By far NOT the most tasteless April Fool's joke ever but you guys seem to think it's on the same level as denying the Holocaust. Or the moon landing. Or that Holocaust on the Moon that nobody talks about anymore after that death-decree by the Freemasons.
Oh, shit - I talked about it. I'm as good as dead. Oh well, screw it. Might as well tell everyone who killed Kennedy. It was *gurgle* *gasp* *ugh*

I read the book Michigan Murders by Edward Keyes. I was a small child when these murders took place. I been obsessed with the book and John Norman COllins for several yrs.. I have you tube John Collins and saw an interview done with him and Marilyn Turner back in the late 80s.. He still claims he is innocent( go figure) He shows no feelings or remorse for anything. I can relate to the scare that he caused back in the late 60s. In the late 70s one of the other famous serial murders the Oakland Child Killer victim Timmy King was found less then a mile from my home.. The scare that this caused our community was overwhelming.. To this day I still remmember seeing the police officers directing traffic away from the body found in the ditch. I still feel very badly for the familes of their love ones murder by the hand of such a ruthless murderer. John Norman Collins will meet his maker some day, and will have to answer to him. Its hard to understand what makes a person kill another? so much evil so much hate.. The mind is a very complex misunderstanding.

People always say "lighten up" when they aren't able to put themselves in the shoes of those directly affected. I was friends with the mother of one of the victims; she just died and I saw her daughter's name in the obit which led me to this thread. If those who joke about Collins' release could imagine the anguish of a parent who pictures their child being tortured, cut up, raped, & strangled, i doubt they'd be making jokes. A great book with a way to understand, & even have compassion, for Collins is "The Biology of Violence". When children who are violently abused start feeling an adrenaline rush during their suffering, they can easily(?) become violent abusers & killers themselves. (At least, that's how i remember one of the book's points.)This makes more sense to me than the concept of "evil".

Gregory A. Fournier said...

The "escape" attempt was an April Fools prank and never happened.

Most people know that Collins had no chance for parole, what most people don't know is that he can be pardoned by a current standing governor. Unlikely but possible.

Wow! This blows my mind to see this online.
I've known John since before he was arrested. I was too young to date, but he came to my house and we talked on the phone a lot. My parents liked him and thought he was very respectful, and not like the other smart asses I knew. My dad was proud that he was thinking about his future and going to college. My parents invited him on family outings camping and swimming. The only time my dad had a hissy was when he caught me sitting in John’s car listening to his tape deck rock and roll. Lol When he came over on his motorcycle he asked my father very politely if he could take me for a ride and my dad said NO. So, we just hung out for a while. We never believed that he was the one who killed those girls.

We found out later after he was sentenced that the murders moved over to Oakland County and was kept quite not to scare the public.

Also, we found out that Ted Bundy was in the Ann Arbor area at the same time the killings were done. I actually talked to Ted's attorney when he was on death row, but would not admit to them.

After all these years he still sends me a Birthday card and a Christmas card every year. I've only visited once in 1986 and I really don't believe that he murdered Karen. There were too many things that witness stated that were incorrect. Like the bike was wrong and the shirt was not like his stripped shirt, but similar.

But the California crime scares me and I never got ahold of the transcripts to research it.

Then there is the DNA that he refused to do. He thinks that the government will switch the evidence to prove that he did it. He does not trust anyone, even after I told him that I would be present to witness the procedure. So, I stand mute. I don't know and I have accepted that he will be there for the rest of his life and I can't do anything to help him.

Unknown said...

One more thing I'd like to add that has been bothering me since day one. Like I said I was dating John when he was arrested. His hair was long passed his shoulders. the police sketch from the eye witnesses had short hair short! When they arrested John the police cut his hair exactly like the sketch. Short!!!

When I saw him on TV I was shocked that he had his hair cut. My dad told me that he had to cut his hair in jail to be presentable to the judge.

So, you see that there are so many things in question that tells me we don't know the real truth.

I grew up in east Detroit....at the time....I really don't think he did it....to much inconsistent evidence....what a shame if he didn't do it and had to spend his entire life doing hard time....I now live in Marquette area and have friends that r guards.....I played baseball in the prison in 1978... John was the Catcher...due to riots we could,nt play the convicts anymore.....I really think Ted bundy did it he was downstate at the time.....my opinion....

I would like to see him get away or at least be given a DNA test. It is clear that the officials were so to lazy to even look for the right killer they blamed it on the wrong person.

Over zealous prosecutor and I must admit, a dumb fuck detective. Don't believe everything you read. Find the real killer. Do the real work. Run John Run

I was a resident of the State and housed at MBP 1986, lived in G Bldg. with Mr. Chapman for 11 months. He was a nice person. And that is saying a lot for all of you who have not experienced the many types of persons in prison. If he ever gets out he will not go to Michigan... Of course you never really know someone unless you know them... How well do you know your friends now? The most dangerous people are the ones who are not suspicious at all... They have everything in order, follow there schedule rigorously, got everything under control... know anybody like that?
