Eastern Michigan in the FINAL FOUR! Well for the new University President search anyway

That's right, Eastern has named the FOUR finalists for new University President:

*Kenneth Burnley, senior resident fellow and director of the Education Leadership Center at the University of Michigan's School of Education.

*Michael Flanagan, Michigan's superintendent of public instruction.

*Susan Martin, a provost and vice chancellor at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

*Donald Shelton, a Washtenaw County Circuit Court judge and former EMU regent.

They will be looking to improve upon the abysmal performance of EMU's last two Presidents, John Fallon and Samuel Kirkpatrick which shouldn't be exceptionally hard to do.

I'm not impressed, but I don't know anything more than I read in the paper about these folks.

A couple notes: A University President does some bully pulpit stuff on campus, but their main job is to be a figurehead and raise money. Lots of money, from ever source.

Academic leadership comes from other folk -- and they're jealous of that prerogative. A new President that tries to throw their weight around on academic matters will face an uphill battle.

Nonetheless, they really need a PhD for credibility with faculty, unless they have massive political pull.

Like a former governor (e.g. Dan Evans @ Evergreen State, 1977-83) or US senator (e.g. David Boren @ Oklahoma).

None of these folks are anywhere near that level.

My guess? Martin looks like the strongest candidate ($$$) so they'll probably go with someone else....

But what do I know?

An expensive exercise. Wasn't there some dirt coming out recently about that guy that was head of Detroit Public Schools?

I seem to recall that recently there were some issues that came to light while he was in charge. If I get some time, I may have to do a little googling and see if I can find out what I read.

Here's one beaming endorsement...

Kenneth Burnley’s education legacy may have just taken a big hit. Burnley, the former Detroit Public Schools chief executive officer, had been praised by The Detroit News when he left in July for applying "sound management tools" in the district — an assessment that may be revised following yesterday’s revelation in the MIRS Capitol Capsule that the Detroit Public Schools may have illegally collected $259 million in property taxes since July 2002. This error, which would have occurred on Burnley’s watch, could force the financially desperate school district to refund the money and plunge into a new sea of red ink.

But as significant as this oversight is, what’s every bit as important for would-be school reformers is the school-choice lesson Burnley’s tenure provides.

Wow, thanks for the legwork on some of them crew. I haven't really delved into anyone other than Shelton, being familiar with him locally.

Good work!

glimmertwinfan--I just did a Google search and some checking on Burnley---yeah, maybe not our best choice

Granted, being in charge of anything having to do with DPS is a nightmare. But there was something else. There was one of those "investigations" that was on TV and DPS was involved - it was either renting property, or something to do with contractors, I can't remember exactly. But is was an obvious fraud/mismangement/insanity and it all occurred while he was overseeing the show. I just wish I could remember more about it. But it was just within the past couple of months that I saw it.

Here it is. I guess it wasn't as recent I seemed to remember. There was more to this story that just this video clip. The news investigation determined that somehow this was happening on his watch.
