What do I think. I am thankful that it is not Kenneth Burnley. How that guy even got to be one of the finalists doesn't say too much about the process.
Higher education is like politicians. Everyone keeps rewarding each other until they just retire and go away.
Yes, he was last on my list too. Shelton would have been OK as someone who lives around here and understands the whole EMU mindset.
She's a good choice, we'll see what she can do. I just hope she doesn't start some program right out of the box like so many do to show A) They are in charge and B) Change for change's sake
My wish list is for more simple things.
Like heat in the classrooms and toilet paper in the bathroom stalls.
My wife goes to school there and when I hear her telling me things like this are missing - it makes me resent writing those checks - which keep getting bigger I might add.
You see, I keep my objects seemingly within reach as so it isn't so easy to disappoint.
Burnley, on the other had, has been commended repeatedly by multiple media outlets, letters to the editors, etc., for being so "brave for taking on such difficult positions". Yes, that is an admirable quality. But where I come from, results are what counts, not willingness to take on challenges. Can anyone honestly say the Detroit Public Schools were in any better shape the day he left versus the day he arrived? No you can't. In fact, the press has documented that there was even more corruption and freewheeling spending during his tenure than any other time.
Time will tell if the new president is a good choice. I certainly hope so.
