A question for the powers that be in Ypsilanti

What would it take to get the Gus Macker tournament back downtown? Those were fun filled community events. Loved walking around downtown seeing everyone having fun.

Just asking.....

There were a number of folks at city hall that hated the Gus Macker tournament including the former mayor and the former police chief. When I first came to down I was told it brought the wrong people downtown. You can figure out what kind of wrong people they were talking about.

It was the same criticism from the same folks that we had too many African Hair Braiding Places.

I think we should look at bringing it back. I wonder if the current leaders would support such an effort. I would be willing to work to bring it back.

If they pay their taxes and have a good customer base I don't care how many African hair braiding places we have.

I mean it was fun and something to do and I don't recall any street fights or riots over the Gus Macker. Conversely I think we've had some pretty nasty dust ups at TOWNIE night, before the Art Fair starts and nobody says that's bringing the wrong types of people downtown.

Grand Rapids is having theirs in the White Caps stadium parking lot. We could possibly use the lots by the ACC and Rynearson if certain people are mortified that we'd hold an event that might draw African Americans. Seems pretty defeatist to me to think as a community we can't handle a Gus Macker tourney.
