Can we make the woodpecker the official Ypsilanti city bird?

For the last few springs, Johnny has noticed a preponderance of woodpeckers in his neighborhood. Early in the morning, mid afternoon, even in the evening the wonderful sound of the woodpecker tapping off his hunt for food, echoes through the neighborhood. This year there sure seem to be more of them and that's a good thing.

So, can we make the woodpecker the unofficial official city bird?

I'm all for the woodpecker as our official city bird. There used to be huge old silver maple in front of the house next to us, and the woodpeckers loved it. The owner had it cut down last fall, but I was happy to see them planting an oak in its place; our neighborhood has lots of maples of all varieties, but not nearly enough oaks.

We've got a walnut tree that had a branch split off of in a storm last year and the woodpecker(s) are having a field day with it just off my porch. The closest they've ever come. I even got a picture of one on my cell phone camera but it's certainly not good enough to use here.

Just love that comforting sound...
