University of Michigan Professor Jan Svejnar fell short today in his bid to become president of the Czech Republic, as incumbent Vaclav Klaus was reelected for a five-year term.
The Associated Press reported Klaus received the support of 141 deputies and senators in the third round of voting at a joint session of the upper and lower chambers of the Czech legislature; 140 votes were needed for re-election. Svejnar received 111 votes.
Svejnar is a professor of economics, business administration and public policy at U-M.
