Ypsilanti American Legion building destroyed by fire overnight

American Legion Hall Post 282 in Ypsilanti, at 117 S. Huron St., was destroyed by fire overnight, causing police to close off Huron St. from Woodward to Michigan Avenue as the water used to fight the fire turned the street into an ice rink. Huron St. was still closed early this morning.

City workers were salting and scraping Huron St. this morning to get it repoened. Firefighters didn't leave the scene until just after 7am today.

Two measures of good news from this fire, the building IS insured and according to Post Sr. Vice Cmdr. Amir Fawzy, the post's scrapbook safe at his home.

Sorry to hear about this fire but very happy to hear there were no injuries. I hope those residents can avoid any slip-and-falls while the city works to eliminate the ice.

It is always ashame when historic structures (which I believe that was, no?) are destroyed. you can never rebuild the "character" of those structures along that road.

Right on GlimmerTwinFan, you lose more than just a building, you lose history.

Also glad nobody was hurt and I would suppose walking on all that ice trying to put it out can be more than a little dangerous so hats off YFD
