Johnny has a friend who lives near all the action down in New Orleans. She's been favoring a few of us with videos of the floats and bands and the essence that is New Orleans on this, "Lundi Gras" the day BEFORE the Carnival.

if you want to see some of the action live, the local paper has webcams set up. go to www.nola.com and look for the mardi gras parade cams. if you want to see tourists gone wild, look at the bourbon street cam. if you want to see the more local stuff, look for the parade cam at fat harry's.

I have been to Mardi Gras twice back in my younger, single days. Once I stayed outside New Orleans with friends and the second time I stayed right on the edge of the French Quarter.
My wife makes remarks about going some day and I would highly recommend against it. New Orleans is not a safe place to be during Mardi Gras season. Maybe if you ventured around town during the daytime only, but at night, forget about it.
If I were ever to go back to New Orleans it would not be during Mardi Gras. The town has much to offer and is a very neat place. But I can do without all the pickpockets and riff-raff that seem to be hanging around the French Quarter during the festivities.
Don't get me wrong, I can hang with the best of them and am not bashing someone for wanting to go. But one must be careful there.
glimmer, that's a good reason to hang uptown, with the families. that's where these clips were taken.
that being said, i've never had my pocket picked in new orleans or anywhere else. basic safety precautions should be observed. here's a tip: take a cheap camera and your lisence and 1 credit card if you plan on getting stinking drunk. don't wear your bling...you'll get beads, anyway.
personally, i don't like the crowds in the quarter.
the french quarter fest is a better bet for music and smaller crowds.
Oh now glimmertwinfan, Oddzy's right down there and she's doing fine. I think it'd be fine to go. You have to be careful in every city you go to.
If you go anywhere normal precautions should do. I go to Detroit all the time and I simply do the simple safe things and I've never had a problem there.
Sorry guys, but I am sticking to my recommendation. I also go to Detroit all the time and love it.
However, during Mardi Gras in the quarter the crowds can be shoulder to shoulder. I can say from personal experience that I have actually been in fights with thieves attempting to get into my pockets (and also a buddy's that I was with).
Yes, the parades are very cool and offer a nice retreat away from the chaos on the streets right near them.
Believe me, I am no suburban yuppie and I have always gravitated towards the more "urban" environments. I love Detroit, Ypsi (downtown) and grew up going to an inner-city high school. I don't scare easily. But New Orleans is a different animal and *my own personal experiences* keep me sticking to my story.
I'd go back, but not at Mardi Gras time and not with my family. Sorry, but if truth hurts, but it is what it is.
