Mr. Dingell, we might have been born at night, but it wasn't LAST night

Oh to hear Congressman John Dingell tell it, to solve global warming YOU must suffer and YOU must sacrifice. Just don't ask any big DONORS and SUPPORTERS of Congressman Dingell to sacrifice.

See, over-the-hill-John is trying to SCARE citizens into doing nothing on global warming with his so-called "discussion draft".

The lowlights?

*A 50-cent gasoline tax, YOU pay
*A carbon tax YOU pay
*And a scaling back tax breaks for some home owners like YOU

John Dingell calls on major supporters like the auto companies to do NOTHING. That's right, NOTHING. He calls on major corporations to do NOTHING. Nope, it's all on you. This should surprise nobody, John Dingell is so far in the pockets of the auto companies he burps lint.

How about a little SHARED SACRIFICE Johnny? CAFE standards anyone? Higher MPG cars? Less coal belching plants like DTE Energy loves?

YCD is FAR from being the enviro-earth-Al Gore loves me website. YCD realizes one day the sun will burn out and none of this will matter. That being said to try these blatant SCARE TACTICS and expect ALL the burden to be felt by the citzenry is disgraceful.

Shame on you John Dingell.

Shame

It really pains me to write this, but Dingell is somewhat (mostly) correct.

Increasing the cost of gas to consumers (a market-based solution) would be more effective than raising CAFE standards (a government mandate). A carbon tax and/or cap & trade system (market-based solution) would be more effective than requiring x% of energy production to be renewable (a government mandate).

These are not opinions, this is basic economics. It's Adam Smith's "invisible hand" of the market at work, and time after time, it's been demonstrated in practice.

cmadler. I think he's stonewalling. I do. Why not charge giant corporate entities for their carbon footprints? I DO NOT wannna ever hear from any politician "Oh but that'll cost jobs". EVERYTHING they disagree with is ALWAYS met with "But think of the JOBS lost".

And it never happens that way.

Here in Michigan we ought to be putting a lot of money towards hydro power, like they do across the way in Canada.

Staunch bleeding heart liberal that I am, it pains me to say this:

Regardless of whatever tax he proposes, Dingell leaves a bad taste in my mouth. When I was at EMU I was pulled into a mandatory assembly (just like high school) about the importance of voting. Ok, cool, right? Except that it was only a speech on the importance of voting for the democratic party. I've always voted democratic and foresee that I always will, but I still felt like I was being tricked into listening to him spout off what was basically propaganda.

Just imagine how pissed I would have been if I was a Republican.

Melanie--
Sadly John Dingell has done an absolutley awful job representing the western parts of his constituency, Ypsi and Ann Arbor. He does just fine with Taylor, and downriver but he's simply not an effective Congressman for us. We have Pothole John Engler and the Republicans to thank when they redrew the districts to put Lynn Rivers and Dingell in the same district years ago.
