Today is the FIVE year anniversary of the BLACKOUT, share your blackout stories

What were YOU doing when it hit? How did you cope?

Johnny ran down to the Keg when it happened and bought ice and batteries and then the entire neighborhood had one whopping 'empty the freezer and fridge of meat' BBQ. Then we got the telescope out and with no ambient lighting had a delightful look at Mars.

What's YOUR story?

I was living in Grand Blanc at the time...which I think was the first city north of Detroit that didn't lose power.

The closest gas station to I-75 had cars backed up for what looked like a couple hundred yards. It was a bit surreal knowing that we were right on the blackout's border.

Anonymous--You probably had a good laugh at the goofs in line for gas. I didn't understand that idea--MUST GET GAS NOW that the power is out. Sit tight, it'll work itself out. Obviously you don't have to work if you don't have power so no real need to stand in line for hours to fill up.

Word, if a riot starts up, it'll probably be over malcontents fighting over gasoline...

I was rolling into Traverse City about 4 pm and was lucky enough to completely miss it. My only inconvenience was to have to empty my fridge and freezer when I got back.

Timing is everything.

I sat on my porch every night with a huge ax until 4 or 5 in the morning.
I saw some really weird stuff.
The grid is like a net of chain holding things into the downlow, when it's gone things raise up....

We stayed in our house the first night, and then bugged out for the beach. We had been at Lake Michigan the weekend before, and with 1/2 a tank of gas we decided to head back. After a fill up in Grand Rapids we rode out the blackout in an air-conditioned hotel room and on a sandy shore.

Since nobody opened it, the stuff in the freezer downstairs actually survived. Most things were thawed, but they stayed cold enough to be safe.

As hot as it was that night pj, the beach was a great decision.
