Ypsilanti, MI – Last week, the Friends of the Ypsilanti Freighthouse submitted a request for funding to the My Hometown Helper project, which is a community aid project from Hamburger Helper.
The organization laid out a short history of the freighthouse, detailed why it is important to the community and requested $15,000 for repairs. My Hometown Project accepted the request and has posted it on their website where members of the community can show their support by writing comments.
The Ypsilanti Freighthouse is a 125-year-old landmark building in Depot Town. It was originally used to store freight for Michigan Central Railroads and was bought by the city in 1979. It housed the Ypsilanti Farmers market for about 25 years. In 2004 insurers withdrew coverage fearing that the building was not structurally sound. Without the funds for much needed repairs, the city closed the freighthouse. The Friends of the Ypsilanti Freighthouse, a non-profit community group, took over management of the building in 2005 and has been working to raise money for repairs so that it can be reopened.
My Hometown Helper is a nationwide initiative by Hamburger Helper that helps local groups make a difference in their own community.
Citizens can show support by going HERE and entering a comment to show why this project is important to them.
