We're not in the business of trying to make people look bad but this one is served up on a platter.
Say you're a gem thief. Say you want to know the value of the pieces you've just 'allegedly' stolen. Would you:
A) Wait a while for the heat to blow over
B) Try to have them appraised out of state
C) Take high definition pictures and send them to shady dealers online
D) Take the gems, march right over to the nearest jeweler and have them appraised.
If you chose D you are EMU student Michael Edward-Lopez Sherer who was arrested at Abracadabra which is a jewelry store and gem GALLERY, which recognized the gems from a flyer given to them that morning by a grad student in the geology department. The gems were stolen last week from the C. C. Little Building.
More on the gems from the Ann Arbor News:
"The collection consists of crafted gems, uncut minerals and several small pieces, about an inch long or less, that is conservatively valued at at least $20,000 but is believed to be significantly higher, department officials said.
Many were mined in the 1800s and were displayed by the department long before officials consolidated the collection for building renovations in 1995, said Robert Patterercq, department administrator.
Patterer said the collection, pieced together over decades from around the globe, is a significant department symbol and has great sentimental value to faculty and staff."
County jail, 100K bond, April 2nd court date yadda yadda yadda

But they were so shiny...
"We are oft to blame in this. 'Tis too much proved that with devotion's visage and pious action we do sugar o'er the devil himself."
