Ypsilanti City Council passes $14 million dollar budget

The Ypsi City Council passed next year's budget last night, fully funding AATA bus service into and out of the city with cuts in many other places. There were "layoffs' associated with the budget however none of these positions has anyone in them now so it's more of an elimination of the postion.

The millage will be increased 1.02 mills which will be used to pay for pensions for police officers and firefighters and street improvement loans. It amounts to an increase of 100 bucks for every $200K in your home's market value.

There is nothing in the Ypsilanti/Ypsilanti Township that warrants the absurd amount of property taxes homeowners must pay.

Believe me I *like* the area, but is it worth owning real estate here? I just don't think so.

My wife and I have been debating purchasing additional real estate for rental - but after doing the math, it just isn't worthwhile in this area.

It's a shame - but government spending, locally and federally is completely out of control. This state is badly injured, and is only making it worse by taxing property owners.

That's the great catch-22 of the system, taxes pay for everything, when taxes go up people may leave increasing the burden on those left. Man I wish I had an answer. If Ypsilanti cut all the taxes, people WOULD move here but over time, in the meantime we'd have no buses, no police, no fire etc.

It's an utter and complete mess
