I thought that little "pull my finger" game I had with my sons after cooking out was a little more intense a couple of weeks back. Now I know why.
Interesting how they can never trace food to the *real* source.
Yeah, and every company takes these things "very seriously' and yet they happen again and again and again
What has happened in this country is that meat producers have consolidated. There are only a handfull of processors that receive product from all over the place and process it.
I read that the only reason fast food restaurants have consistent tasting beef products is because of chemical plants located on the New Jersey Turnpike that provide flavor. (Fast Food Nation: The Darkside Of The American Meal).
There is something to be said about the few small farms in the area that do produce and sell to consumers. My wife just met one from Pinckney at the Ypsilanti Farmers Market. I have investigated another west of here that specializes in organic beef.
If you are a meat eater and don't like the entire meat distribution system in this country, you do have options. Buy a small freezer and purchase your product from a family where you can actually meet their children when they help you load your purchase in your car.
We get our produce from the farmer's markets, both in Ypsi and Ann Arbor. We grow our own garden filled with tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, peas, and herbs.
We HATE the 7 months a year we're forced to buy produce from retailers.
Without getting too nationally political the Bush Adminstration has been an ABJECT FAILURE at protecting us from poisonous food, and children's toys.
