Late night open thread
Fantastic news (and we debated what to lead with tonight and you'll soon see why) as Gabriel Richard won their quarterfinal game in the MHSAA Basketball Tournament tonight. From the Ann Arbor News:
The Gabriel Richard High School boys basketball team advanced to the Class C semifinals with a 75-72 overtime win against Melvindale Academy for Business & Technology Tuesday night.
Now, and even more detached from reality, YCD has plumbed the incredible depths of the interwebs to bring you a story so strange we don't know what the hell to make of it. A Creepy Gnome? Terrorizing a town in South America? Video? It's all there. The trinity of a good news story.
A TOWN in South America is living in fear after several sightings of a 'creepy gnome' that locals claim stalks the streets at night. The midget - which wears a pointy hat and has a distinctive sideways walk - was caught on video last week by a terrified group of youngsters.

Time for Ypsilanti, After Dark
EMU women are out in the MAC quarterfinals to Ohio U 76-62
They fell behind big early and bravely tried to battle back but Ohio U was able to handle things in the end. Eastern trailed by 18 early in the second half and cut that lead down to 5 but in the end it was the Lady Bobcats (We don't know if they actually call themselves that but it rolls off the tongue you gotta admit) who prevail. EMU finishes their season at 17-12 and a share of the MAC West Championship under first year coach AnnMarie Gilbert. They didn't get as far in the tournament as we'd hoped BUT, Ypsilanti, Gilbert is one good coach and this program maintained poise after a mediocre start as the entire gameplan changed and they hung together and met with some success. With Canea Williams, Kelly Watts and Alyssa Pittman all back next year this team can do some things.

The movers and shakers and citizens have met on a plan for Ypsilanti
Or, a rough outline of a plan to revitalize Ypsilanti using the current buzz around downtown restaurants as a springboard. People KNOW about coming to Ypsi for great food (and we mean GREAT food) but HOW to capitalize and revitalize downtown business district.
A few highlights and suggestions from the meeting which drew over 100 citizens last night at the Riverside Arts Center:
*Work with DTE to keep downtown well lit to improve safety.
*Conduct one on one business retention meetings with existing businesses
*Encourage more evening business hours.
*Encourage restaurants to go with maximum outdoor seating
*Enhance downtown online presence (Johnny stands ready to do his part here)
*Install signs to guide visitors.
Some basic ideas here that we think work quite well. Of course there were others as showing off our best side and drawing in new talent is hard work but as always, Ypsilanti will prevail. The artists and restaurants are here now, and in just about ever other city studied once the artists and restaurants are up and running, the city itself is only 3-5 years behind in economic recovery of some kind.
Remember, don't YOU be afraid to stand up and tell people great things are happening here. Yes some things still suck, every town has those issues, but if we attack which sucks in a postive manner, we can unsuck those things over time. Case and point, when Johnny moved to Ypsi in January of 1983, Depot Town sucked. BIG. Now look. It's a shining jewel in our city crown. It didn't take 10 years or 15 years to fix, it took about 5.
And we'll do the same with the city proper. Hats off to the attendees last night for all your energy!

Men's basketball begin their MAC Tournament on Wednesday at 12:30 vs Ball State (boo hiss) in Cleveland.
Women's basketball begin their MAC Tournament Tuesday at 3pm vs Ohio (boo hiss) in Cleveland
Michigan
Men's basketball will begin the Big Ten Tournament Thursday at 12:00 noon vs Iowa (boo hiss)
Other Big Ten first round games (3/13):
#7 Penn State vs. #10 Illinois 2:30pm
#6 Minnesota vs. #11 Northwestern 5pm

EMU women share MAC West basketball title
The Eastern Michigan women have proven the last couple years to be no fluke as they again won at least a share of the MAC West baskketball title under first year coach AnnMarie Gilbert. EMU finished the regular season at 17-11 and 11-5 in the MAC.
The MAC women's basketball tournament kicks off later today. EMU will play tomorrow.
Also, Colleen Russell and Alyssa Pittman were named to the all MAC teams.

Why? I really do not know. But I made a discovery many of you already know about. Sidetrack Bar and Grille in Depot Town is a great place for a burger and a brew.

U-M implements campus wide 'Emergency Broadcast System'
In the wake of recent campus shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University, the U-M has instituted a text message system to alert students should a campus shooting take place or should another campus emergency (such as Ann Coulter being re-admitted to the Law School there) present itself.
Some examples given as to when students would be alerted:
* When a person actively shooting a weapon is on the loose
* When a tornado is predicted to strike the campus area
* When a major hazardous material spill is impacting a large portion of campus.
