Ypsilanti High chooses new mascot..........The PHOENIX

OK, oddly YCD is OK with this choice. Yes, Braves is better but instead of something horrible, Phoenix is a name that can be worked with, you've got the bird angle the fire angle so you have some room to have some fun.

Now, YCD may have to show SOME what a Phoenix really is and here is ONE conception of the mythical firebird.

So there is ONE artist impression. Now does it come in purple and gold?

Seriously, the student choice of Royals was the BEST replacement choice but some administrators cannot stand it when THEY don't get to choose FOR kids so here we are with Phoenix. We'll see about this but it COULD have been worse, much worse if Board member Andy Fanta had his way, Ypsilanti would have been saddled with the HORRIBLE his choice of, get this, "Olympians".

They have no nickname anymore. None. They are simply the Ypsilantis or purple and golds.

How LAME. I mean how hard is it to pick a nickname? EMU did it in a minute and half years ago (How else do you explain the sanitized EAGLES name?).

The PC crowd has struck again in our fair city, no Braves for Ypsi High, no Hurons for EMU.

How about the Cowboys? They croaked Indians, right?

Since the school board decided not to adopt the student choice of 'Royals' (methinks it's a power grab thing by the board, how DARE the kids who attend the school get to choose, WE are adminstrators, only WE get to say) the school nickname sits in limbo. Sure the board SAYS they'll let students have SOME say, but Ypsi City Desk says let the kids decide. Royals was a fine name, classy, intelligent and not being used by a hundred other schools. The kids are on the right track.
