Again, beggars can't be choosers, a sampling of the U-M student comments on Facebook

Here they are, we'll give full credit to the posters and their comments on this from "The Michigan's Graduation is meant to be in the BIG HOUSE", Facebook Group

"I would MUCH rather be at Chrysler arena with 3 people than 10 at Eastern. If does end up at Eastern, someone else can have my tickets. I live around here, and that' just--no offense EMU friends--embarrassing."--Israel Vicars

"Wow, i'm not even graduating this year and this makes me angry. You went to the UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN....not EMU. how bout u graduate where you went, and where you spent all ur freaking money? Just shut down state street for a few hours....not like you can drive down it anyway."--Sarah Stanley

"We all paid our dues and worked hard, on campus isn;t good enough. We DESERVE the Big House and nothing less. We should continue to fight respectively until we can walk there or not walk at all!!"--Mike Anton

"I've spent 4 years worth of time and money at this school! If I can't walk at the Big House, I"M NOT WALKING AT ALL!!!!!!!!"--Kristi Masica

"I am not attending graduation if it is to be held at EMU... we should organize a student-led graduation in the parking lot in front of the big house- just to prove a point. This blows."--Lyndsey Andary

"As another U-M senior, I am also very upset and disappointed with this situation. But as you're protesting and writing to our administration (which I completely support), please be classy! Putting down Eastern and saying that it's a crappy school makes us all look like ungrateful snobs--and that's not going to get us anywhere. I don't want to graduate at Eastern because I don't identify with Eastern. No amount of maize and blue will make me feel at home. I also agree with what others have said about our speaker, Bob Woodruff. I think he will be great--a Michigan native, alum, and someone with inspiring life experiences is someone that we should have here at U-M. We can't always have a president. I do, however, wonder what HE thinks of this situation!"--Liz Stover

"I REFUSE to graduate in EMU's stadium, this is ridiculous. The school needs to get their act together and clean up the stadium, commencement isn't for three months!"--Sophia Johnson

"back in my day we graduated in crisler in a snowstorm, uphill both ways
you didn't hear me complaining"--Adam Sonnanstine

"I'll graduate at EMU as long as there's an open bar and bullet-proof vests supplied at the door!"--Layne Kiella

"I would rather have commencement in the Big House parking lot than at EMU."--William Hubenschmidt

"I boo this EMU shit."--Jeremy Levine

"Now that commencement is at EMU, maybe they should change the commencement speaker to 'spare some change' guy too."--Claire Zogas

"hey! guess who isn't getting any money now after i graduate in fucking EMU's stadium! i'd rather graduate in my backyard"--Callyn Weintraub

"It's nice of Eastern to let us use their stadium, but this is LAME."--Andrew Bleeda

Not surprising to see how many of the comments are badly-written, full of spelling and grammatical errors beyond online shorthand. Should they be graduating at all? From the looks of it, no.

And our favorite, after four years they still call the building next to the precious BIG HOUSE, 'CHRYSLER ARENA', rather than it's proper 'Crisler Arena'.

I'd remind them all (well not all, a handful are gracious towards EMU and Ypsilanti) of the last words Johnny Rotten spoke at Winterland before walking off stage as a Sex Pistol for the last time

"Ah ha ha, ever get the feeling you've ben cheated?"

Thank goodness there's one comment up there (Liz') that is well though out. The 'bullet-proof vest' comment, on the other hand, is a sure sign she hasn't stepped foot outside of Ann Arbor in her entire undergraduate career. So sad they don't have any classes on maturity at U-M...

It's funny, I'd wager MOST don't know La Fiesta Mexicana was voted by Epicurious as the BEST Mexican food in AMERICA and the Sidetrack was voted 7th best burger in the land. Surely they eat out and would enjoy these FINE Ypsilanti dining establishments.

But sadly, to them we're the land of bullet proof vests, crime, no goodniks and blight, despite the fact OUR basketball arena is WAY better than theirs and our roads get cleaned when it snows.

The multiple comments about "how much money I've" and "how much money we've" spent.

My bet is the majority had mommy and daddy footing the bill anyway.

Actually I'm going into debt to attend U of M - my "mommy and daddy" can't afford to foot the bill. Like most other upset seniors, I just want what I paid for. Graduating in our stadium is part of the Michigan experience and it sucks at nearly the end of four years to face the very late-received news that our last experience here won't be what we've been expecting and what we've earned. It's not about EMU as an alternative. It's about no alternative being okay. If you don't go to U of M I don't know why you feel you have the insight to criticize the situation to begin with. Yes we're pressuring the administration to make a change if at all humanly possible. We wouldn't be U of M students if we didn't care.

Anonymous, you did read some of those comments on Facebook correct? Most of you are trying to pressure the administration at Michigan but where WE come in is that we're merely trying to be neighborly and we see UM Students making 'EMU spare change' and 'bullet proof vest' comments.

We all know that there is no comparison between EMU and UM, or Ypsi vs. Ann Arbor for that matter. It is also fine to be so dedicated to your school that you really want to graduate at the Big House.

But bullet proof vests? Witholding alumni funding? Give me a break. For a graduation ceremony? I would have been more pissed when they started giving students football tickets for every other game instead of every game.

It's great to be loyal to your school. But thumbing your nose down at a neighboring community is pretty lame in my book for providing a solution.

At least Ypsi's stadium will have enough handicap access for those that need it - unlike U-M.

You're reacting to just a fraction of the comments from that Facebook group. The comments posted on this blog entry do not represent the overall feelings expressed, and if you saw the actual group page or talked to most U of M students that wouldn't be the overwhelming sentiment. Like I said before, it's about wanting to graduate in our stadium, nothing more. People talking down about EMU are probably just bitter, as most of the people on this blog criticizing U of M students seem to be as well. Except the bitterness about U of M is a bit unfounded, while we have an actual issue we're trying to deal with.

An you wonder why SOME people have a certain image of SOME U-M folk.

You're right, we should just take the insults and digs while you work out your earth shattering issues. I suppose we should be lucky you allow us to live in the same county.

The days of this town turning the other cheek and being deferential to A2 are LONG since past.

So basically you're saying U of M students have nothing to be upset about, while you are completely justified getting offended about a few comments that most U of M students don't agree with?

Johnny Action Space Punk said...

No, Im saying you DO have something to be upset about. I'm also saying a lot of the anger and vitriol I have read on the Michigan Daily and the Facebook pages is misguided towards EMU.

Of COURSE you have a beef. We'd not be discussing any of this is you didn't, but the emotions of SOME have spilled overboard into attacks on EMU which is why we chimed in.

Johnny Action Space Punk said...

One more thought I'd like to mention is something NOT being discussed and that is U-M knew ahead of time construction would dislodge your graduation and yet nobody is calling U-M out for their GREED of money through the football program and all the luxury boxes they want for rich alumni and corporations at the detriment of your very EDUCATIONAL experience.

It's the U-M Administration and Athletic Department greed that is ruining your day, not EMU.

I really now think maybe the greaduation should just be held at Crisler and one or two tickets given out.

I guess it doesn't seem right to me that you're using a few peoples' comments to make this about you and having a fit over it, but you don't seem to have a problem making your own bitter comments about U of M students in return.

And this goes out not just to you but many who have made comments on this blog and other sites -- It really seems like people are just taking this opportunity to lash out at U of M students with a bitterness that has been building up long before this situation occurred. Most Michigan kids, on the other hand, are disappointed in the administration and just want to get commencement back on campus.

I really hope for the grad's sake is IS put back on U-M's campus, always hoped it was.

We were only ever an emergency stop to begin with, and we certainly hoped all this could have come off with less acrimony to be sure, nobody enjoys this kind of pissing match (OK, except me) and for all the grads interests we DO hope you are able to get U-M to open Crisler and maybe the closed circuit TV idea from Rackham that the Michigan Daily mentioned this morning could be worked out.

Best of luck in getting it back on campus there!
