There is a movement afoot to remove the Argo Dam, where the Huron River takes it's sharpest drop, and open up a white weater rafting experience. Now, the plan is only in the talking stages but we'd like to endorse a better use of a removed Argo Dam--hydro power.
We feel if the dam is to be removed (and there is a lot of time before that could happen) we'd like to see something that would benefit everyone since the rivers and lakes belong to everyone. Sure white water rafting would fun and cool for some, but in this new age of much higher power costs, Tree City should be looking into a hydro-plant of some kind.

Friday night fun at 'The Full Moon Paddle'
First, heads out of gutters, secondly, the Gallup Park Canoe Livery, located at scenic 3000 Fuller Road, is offering YOU the opportunity to canoe the Huron River by moonlight, THIS Friday, yeah, tomorrow.
The canoeing will be from 8-11 pm and canoes and kayaks and U-boats will be available at the livery but they ask that you do bring a flashlight.
The cost is $18 dollars which isn't bad if you get 7 or 8 people in your canoe.

On this date in Ypsilanti History
Dateline April 15, 1897
Jebediah Ingalls and his family were lost to the Huron River near the big bend by what some locals are calling 'River Monster' (See YCD coverage of the river monster here). The family was travelling by small water craft up the river when suddenly onlookers described screaming, thrashing in the water, chewing noises then a giant gulping sound. "I never seen nothing like it, like some kind of serpent" said Alfred Woodruff "Swallowed 'em up it did". Constables are investigating.

Uh oh, we've got a floater......
Police in Ann Arbor are fishing a floating body out of the Huron River near Main and Depot Street. Police are roping off the area and awaiting the Medical Examiner.

Huron Parkway bridge work is FINALLY DONE!!
All four lanes across the Huron River on Huron Parkway are now open! Nearly SIX MONTHS late, it's now open for business.
Now we begin to ask WHY it was delayed by half a year. Construction crews said they ran into far more rust on the bridge than anticipated. Which, if true (The amount of steel that needed replacing went from 3,500 pounds to 27,000), it DOES call into question the preliminary reporting done by consulatants. How do you miss THAT MUCH rust?
Either the city got taken for a few extra thousand pounds of steel and labor (and we doubt it) or the consultants who looked over the bridge did a piss poor job.

BREAKING NEWS--Ypsilanti River Monster strikes again
Intrepid Ypsi City Desk reporter Daniel X breaks news on the young boy who the Ann Arbor News reports FELL into the Huron River:
Ypsilanti boy narrowly escapes from Huron River water beast
Ypsilanti, MI – Around 1pm on Monday afternoon, a 10-year-old Ypsilanti boy fell into the Huron River while fishing. He escaped unharmed after only a few minutes, but onlookers say that the boy was not the only thing in the water at the time.
At approximately 12:50pm on Monday, Ypsilanti Police and Fire crews and Washtenaw County Sheriffs responded to an emergency call at the banks of the Huron River near the Leforge road bridge. The young boy was fishing and apparently fell into the water. This would not normally be a crisis situation, but recently Ypsilanti Police have had reason to believe that a person falling into the Huron River would be in danger from possibly unnatural sources. Marissa Kingston said, “They been watching up and down this river, like something more is in there. I think they believe something’s living in there, but they won’t tell us about it. No way.”
In the past two weeks, Ypsilanti Police have responded to multiple 911 calls regarding a “monster in the river”. Each call has been different, but most have to do with a pet or small animal being taken from the bank into the river, allegedly by a creature. In most cases, the pet was within a few feet of the river and residents claim that their pet was, “there one moment and gone the next”. Witnesses say they looked in time only to see a glimpse of movement under the surface of the water. “It looked like a huge snake, or something like that”, said Ypsilanti resident Matthew Johnson, “I ain’t never seen nothing like that before. People need to be watching out for this beast of a thing.”

Ypsilanti officials have not commented on what could be lurking beneath the surface of the Huron River, but some residents speculate that this “monster” could have something to do with the pollution. “There was a lot of raw sewage that was dumped into the river a while back. That can’t be good for the animals. Eventually they eat that stuff and I guess you get some kind of sci-fi movie like scenario on your hands,” said EMU biology student Samantha Harris.
For now it seems the only action that has been taken is to ensure that no one enters the water. When someone does happen to enter, the police response is large and quick and police do everything in their power to pull the person from the water as fast as they can. Until some more solid answers can be found, the residents of Ypsilanti will just have to stay away from the Huron River and enjoy their water sports elsewhere.
